The Legacy of
Mary Louise Wallace

How Her Kindness and Generosity Reimagined the Greenwich Senior Center
The Town of Greenwich is fortunate to have an abundance of individuals, agencies, and Town Departments committed to helping our aging Greenwich residents live with dignity and to achieve maximum independence and quality of life.

Today and through the days to come, we want to recognize one Riverside resident who had a passion to help those who needed it most, including income-constrained older adults.

Mary's Gift to Older Adults in the Town of Greenwich

At 82, Mary Louise Wallace had lived all of her adult life in Greenwich, and with her passing on January 14, 2021, she leaves behind a legacy of selflessness, generosity, and kindness we can all aspire to.

To assist the older adults in the Town of Greenwich, Mary’s estate gifted $2.5 million to the Friends of the Wallace Center. This gift will supplement existing renovation funds from the Town of Greenwich for the complete renovation of the existing senior center’s interior spaces on the lower level, first floor, and its entryway located at 299 Greenwich Avenue. As a result of her generous gift, the interior spaces of the Wallace Center and the Senior Center Program were approved by the Board of Select people and the Representative Town Meeting to be renamed in her honor as The Mary Louise Wallace Center for Vibrant Living, Purposeful Aging.

Mary’s estate also agreed to leave a significant donation to the Friends of the Wallace Center in the amount of $2.2 million for new evidence-based programming with proven outcomes targeted towards older adults. The additional gift will supplement existing programming at the new Wallace Center that is currently funded by the Town of Greenwich.

We’re excited to share our new, vibrant space with you, and look forward to partnering with you as we empower individuals to make informed choices and to streamline access to appropriate services and supports.
